If you are not already a pet owner, here’s where you can start your journey. This iPhone app for our friends at the UK’s best-known pet rescue centre lets you scroll through a gallery of deserving cats and dogs, making it easy to choose your new companion.

• Re-write history and have a cat lifting the 1966 World Cup, add kitties to your holiday snaps or put a moggie on the moon. It’s all possible with the new version of this app, which lets you draw or stamp cats on to any photo. Sadly you can’t yet use images of your own cat, but there’s an extensive library of feline photos for you to choose from, with inexpensive upgrades allowing you to access even more animals.
